The Cave Salamander For Sale is a medium-sized salamander with a long tail. It is normally bright orange but can vary from yellow brown to orange red. There are distinct dark brown or black spots covering most of the body. The belly is usually yellow orange and without spots. There are 13 or 14 grooves along the side. The end of the tail is often black. Young cave salamanders are yellow with shorter tails.
Salamanders play the long game, with many species living surprisingly long lives. But among these enduring amphibians, there is one outlier – the olm, also known as the proteus.
It has been well documented that these small white cave-dwelling salamanders can live well into their hundreds, but scientists have now gained new insight into the creatures’ glacial pace of life.
Similar Species: Cave Salamander has a larger head and body and has a throat stripe; also separate range.
Breeding information: Very little known. Most Cave Salamanders spend their lives in the larval stage; hence they do not migrate out of the cave environment. Females lay eggs in fall or early winter based upon sightings of small hatchlings in winter. Egg laying is suspected to be similar to Spring Salamanders, which occurs under large rocks.
Habitat: Occurs in caves and sinkholes containing streams.
Diet: Crustaceans, earthworms, beetles, stoneflies, mayflies, and other aquatic insects.
Fun Facts:
- The Cave Salamander was designated our state amphibian in 1995.
